My hobby is working with wood, wood-carving, wood-turning and pyrography, which is the art of burning pictures onto wood. If
you ever wanted to do the same or just want to see how it’s done, just ask in the office or inquire at the time of booking.
So, happy campers, we are your Men’s Shed (Ladies welcome) away from home, where you can meet like-minded people who enjoy
working with wood and you never know, maybe you’ll pick up a new hobby or new skills.
Occasionally, I like a game of chess and here are some pics of my chess set, just click on it to enlarge it.
The wood is just normal Radiata Pine, very cheap and not too bad for carving/shaping. I recommend Radiata for beginners
Here are some pics of my “Australian Jewels” a carving of a frilled neck lizard, unique to Australia, with Australian Opals set into the
carving. It took me about 3 months in my spare time to complete this carving. It’s carved from Huon Pine and sits on a Blackwood base.

am happy to explain how to carve a deep relief carving, such as this. BTW, the picture on the right is the wood- carving.
Pyrography is a very effective way of harnessing your creativity into something absolutely beautiful. Please visit Sue Walter’s website
for some incredible art work. Her skills are amazing, but I can show you the basics.
The latest rage is making wood-pens of
various designs, including the “Celtic Knot”
and other forms of “inlay”. Australian woods
can be very distinct with their colours and
pens made from Australian woods are very
suitable as a useful and welcome gift. You
will be able to learn of how to make these
pens, even using my lathes under certain
conditions. Just imagine if someone asks you
- ‘Where did you get this?’ And you can say -
‘I made it!’
THE ART OF PYROGRAPHY:

Segmented wood-turning is the art of using
precision pre-cut pieces of wood and gluing
them together in a pre-determined way.
In this instance, I used plywood, which I cut
into pre-determined pieces of varying widths
and re-glued them into various sized rings
and then re-glued those rings into a raw
bowl. The effect I wanted to achieve has the
look of a weave pattern.
